Did you forget the login credentials to your OpenMediaVault server?

I run OpenMediaVault at home and I have lost count of the times I have forgotten my login credentials.

If you run OMV and are pretty sure you stuck to the default login, but cannot remember the details try the default username and password for OpenMediaVault:
Username: admin
Password: openmediavault

If those credentials do not work, all is not lost.

You can SSH into your device and run a utility to reset a variety of omv details, including the login credentials.

I’ll leave the “how” of SSH to others but go ahead and SSH into your device.

From the command line, run the handy utility “omv-firstaid”

$ omv-firstaid

This is the screen you will see after running the command.

If you have managed to try an incorrect password too many times, you can select #4 “Reset failed login attempt counter.”

Choosing this resets the counter on how many times you have failed to use the correct password.

If you are a glutton for punishment, you can hit the omv webGUI and keep trying passwords, coming back to omv-firstaid to reset the password again, and so on.

Once you have acknowledged defeat, Select 3 from the First Aid menu – “Change control panel administrator password”

Just as the prompt asks, enter a new password and then select < OK >

Enter the new password a second time to confirm it and select < OK >

REMEMBER THE PASSWORD.

Perhaps write it down and save it in a safe place.

I had to reboot my raspberry pi after making this change in order for the password to work. YMMV.

You should now be able to login from the omv webGUI.

I am not an expert in OpenMediaVault, the Raspberry Pi, or Linux. I just enjoy tinkering and thought these tips might save you some pain.
